By definition State 1 is a coin made before the die making the coin started to wear and have die cracks and/or clash marks. In some cases no coins have yet been discovered in State 1. This will be be indicated (as shown above in the Sample Reverse) by an asterisk (1*) after the one, denoting this assumed state. In other cases coins have been found in State 1 (with no signs of die wear) and they will have no asterisk after the one as shown above for the Sample Obverse.
