The Catalog # for 14 + E16x will be PC59-25A.
63. 10-25-2019 For some time it was thought there were only 3 obverse "bridge dies" that were paired with both the 1859/8 and narrow 9 reverse dies. After a careful study of the obverse dies of both types of 1859's we have found there are actually two more "bridge dies". Because these discoveries were made after the Haxby die numbers were made permanent, these die numbers will not change in the catalog even though they were paired with 1859/8 reverse dies first and then the narrow 9 reverses.
Haxby Obverse Die 1 is the same as Turner obverse die OG2. This bridge die was first paired with Turner reverse RD8 and then with Haxby reverse E2.
Haxby Obverse Die 10 is the same as Turner obverse die OJ1. This bridge die was first paired with Turner reverse RD1 and then with Haxby reverses E12 and E12a.
62. 10-15-2019 New Haxby catalog numbers are now in the catalog. In addition to the Haxby numbers page, every die page now has the new catalog number shown for each die pair. Here is the Reference Page that shows both old and new Haxby numbers to aid in re-numbering your collection.
Rarity Ratings for all 248 Haxby die pairs are now available in a new article in the catalog.
61. 9-14-2019 COMING SOON! The finalization of Haxby die and catalog numbers and the addition of Rarity Ratings for all 248 Haxby N9 die pairs. Here is a link to the page announcing the changes coming on October 15.
60. 11-20-2018 There are some catalog and die # changes due to some recent discoveries.
1. Obverse die 16a has been found to be the early state of Obverse Die 31a.
Obverse 16 will also be renumbered because 16 and 16a share a reverse die.
2. Reverse die G2 was paired with old Obverse 31a prior to old Obverse 31. (This is the opposite of what was previously thought).
The following are the new catalog and die numbers as a result of these discoveries.
Please note the many Reverse die number changes.
PC59-311 31 (old 16)+ E31 (old E18)
PC59-31a1 31a + E31 (old E18)
PC59-31a2 31a + E31a (old E32)
PC59-31a3 31a + E31b (old E32a)
PC59-31a4 31a + E31c (old E32b)
PC59-31a5 31a + E31d (old E32c)
PC59-31a6 31a + G2
PC59-31a7 31a + F6
PC59-31b1 31b (old 31)+ E32 (old E31)
PC59-31b2 31b + G2
PC59-31b3 31b + E32a (old E31a)
PC59-31b4 31b + E32b (old E31b)
PC59-31b5 31b + E32c (old E31c)
59. 3-24-2018 Obverse 48 and Obverse 57 have been found to be the same die. As a result the
12 die pairs and reverse dies associated with those two obverses will be combined and
re-numbered as shown below.
Collectors may wonder why these discoveries of two dies being the same turn up occasionally and why they are not discovered sooner. The primary reason is the lack of high grade examples to compare. With 100 obverse dies and 221 reverse dies known, there are many dies which have similar features and characteristics. On lower grade specimens, identical features may not appear to be the same due to coin wear and/or damage, and as a result they are believed to be two different dies when they are in fact the same. This is the case with Obverses 48 and 57. Higher grade examples have been found which show them to be the same.
The main goal of the Haxby 1859 Catalog is to accurately identify all obverse and reverse dies, die pairs, and die states. This sometimes means that renumbering is necessary to maintain that accuracy. We do apologize for the inconvenience and sometimes confusion that brings, but we are confident that collectors will be glad that we keep the information up to date and accurate. Thank you for your patience!
And, now for the new numbers:
Note that all reverse dies associated with this change have new numbers.
Obverse 57 and Reverse J16 will become spares.

58. 12-1-2017 Reverse dies F3a and F3b have been found to be the same die. Reverse F3b is a later state of F3a, so F3b will be eliminated. As a result, the Obverse 27 group will now be numbered as follows:
(27 + H1) will remain Catalog # 271.
(27 + F3 ) will remain Catalog # 272.
(27 + E28 ) will become Catalog # 273. (Previously 274)
(27 + F3a ) will become Catalog # 274. (Previously 273)
(27 + E28a ) will become Catalog # 275. (Previously 276)
Catalog # 276 will be eliminated.
57. 10-24-2017 Obverse dies 68 and 78 have been found to be the same die. Obverse 68 is a later state of Obverse 78, so Obverse 68 will become a spare, and the die pairs associated with the old obverse 68 will be renumbered as follows:
Old 681 (68 + J26) will become 782 (78 + J26)
Old 682 (68 + P7) will become 783 (78 + P16a) ( note the reverse die number change)
56. 8-26-2017 Added new Reverse Die G4a. Reverse Die G4a was used with Obverse 33 after G4 and before E35b.
The Catalog # for 33 + G4a will be PC59-333x.
55. 8-15-2017 Added new Reverse Die J16x. Reverse Die J16x was used with Obverse 57
before J16, hence its designation J16x.
The Catalog # for 57 + J16x will be PC59-571x.
54. 5-2-2017 Added newly discovered Reverse Die I3x. Reverse Die I3x was used with Obverse 41 before I3, hence its designation I3x.
The Catalog # for 41 + I3x will be PC59-412x.
53. 12-26-2016 Added newly discovered Reverse Die E22x. Reverse Die E22x was used with Obverse 20 before E22, hence its designation E22x.
The Catalog # for 20 + E22x will be PC59-201x.
52. 12-10-2016 5th Anniversary Today!
All the known major changes (New Dies added and duplicates corrected) have been updated in the last couple of months. We will still be adding more full-side photos and detail photos (die cracks, clogs, and other features) in the near future. Thanks to all the 59ers out there! We hope the catalog is both useful and enjoyable to all who visit here.
51. 12-3-2016 Added new Reverse Die E27a. The die previously listed as E27a has been found to be the same as Reverse Die F1. The new E27a was used with Obverse Die 25 after F1 and before E27b. The Catalog # changes are as follows:
25+F1 will become Catalog # PC59-252.
25+E27a (the new die) will become Catalog # PC59-253.
50. 12-1-2016 Obverse Die 51 has been found to be the same as Obverse Die 76.
Obverse 51 will become spare. Obverse die 76 was used first with Reverse J10 and then
with Reverse P14.
So, PC59-761 (76+J10) will be the new Catalog # for the old PC59-511 (51+J10).
PC59-762 will be the new Catalog # for Die pair 76+P14.
49. 11-30-2016 Added new Reverse Die J7x. J7x was used with obverse 48 before J7, hence
its designation J7x instead of J7b.
The Catalog # for 48+J7x will be PC59-481x.
48. 11-30-2016 Added new Reverse Die P22. P22 was used with obverse 58 after J17.
The Catalog # for 58+P22 will be PC59-582.
47. 11-29-2016 Added new Reverse Die E26c. The reverse previously listed as E26c will
now be renumbered to E26d, as the new reverse was paired with Obverse 24 prior to its use
with E26d.
So, the Catalog # for 24+E26c will be PC59-244.
The Catalog # for 24+E26d will be PC59-245.
Reverse E26d has also been found to be the same reverse as E15. Since the Die was paired
with Obverse 24 first and then with obverse 13, Obverse 13 will be renumbered to obverse 24a.
So, the old PC59-131 (13+E15) will now be PC59-24a1 (24a+E26d).
13 and E15 will become spares.
46. 11-21-2016 Added new Reverse Die E38x discovered by Derek Lecours. E38x was used with obverse 37 after E38 and before E38a.
PC59-371x is the new catalog # for die pair 37+E38x.
45. 11-17-2016 Combined Reverse Dies E10 and E21, having discovered they are the same die (E21 being the late states of the die). Since Obverse Die 19 was used with Reverse E10 later than Obverse 8, Obverse 19 is renumbered Obverse 8a.
So, Obverse 19 and Reverse E21 become spare and coins formerly labeled 19+E21 should be relabeled 8a+E10.
PC59-81 remains the catalog # for die pair 8+E10.
PC59-8a1 becomes the catalog # for Die Pair 8a+E10.
44. 10-26-2016 Added new Reverse Die J2c discovered by Randy Mason. J2c was used
with Obverse 39a after J2b.
PC59-39a8 is the new catalog # for die pair 39a+J2c.
Also Reverse Die I1a has been found to be the same as Reverse Die I7a. We will retain
the I7a designation since this die was used first with obverse 45a and then with obverse 39a.
I1a will become spare.
PC59-39a4 will now be die pair 39a+I7a as a result of the change.
43. 10-25-2016 Added new Reverse Die J16g discovered by Doug Carlson. J16g was used
with obverse 57 after J16f.
PC59-578 is the new catalog # for die pair 57+J16g.
42. 10-25-2016 Added new Reverse Die J11b discovered by Randy Mason. J11b was used
with obverse 52a after J11a.
PC59-52a3 is the new catalog # for die pair 52a+J11b
41. 10-22-2016 There is a New Search Feature to help ID reverse dies by Loop 2
in the J and P reverse groups. You can access them from ID by REV MARKERS under the ID my Coin tab.
40. 10-21-2016 Added new Reverse Die P20x discovered by Doug Carlson. P20x was used
with Obverse 82 prior to P20, hence its designation P20x rather than P20a. Reverse P20 remains the same.
PC59-821x is the new catalog # for die pair 82+P20x
PC59-821 remains the catalog # for Die Pair 82+P20
Also, die pair 61+J20 has been found to be the same as die pair 64+J22.
So, obverse die 61 and reverse die J20 become spare and coins formerly labeled 61+J20 should be relabeled 64+J22.
39. 11/10/2015 Updated incorrect date photo for reverse E38b. Also added better leaf 14 DC photo. Added a new feature. Section 5 on each die home page will eventually include a full (reverse or obverse) photo. Check it out on the E24 Reverse page. Enjoy!
38. 3/24/2015 A new feature! All obverse and reverses with 3 or more paired dies have a new quick sorting table in Section 1a. Check it out on obverse 45a or reverse G3, for example. If it is helpful we could also do it for obverses with just 2 reverses.
37. 3/20/2015 Check out the new Reverse and Obverse Die Cracks Tables. LINK They are normally accessed under the "ID my Coin" tab.
36. 3/13/2015 Added die crack and die clog photos to obverse 52a. Also fixed an error where 2 die crack photos for leaves 13 and 16 where posted for reverse E31b when they are actually for reverse E31c. Please double check your attributions based on these adjustments.

The new pair is Haxby PC59-391, other obverse 39 pairs increased by 1 catalog number
22. 1/27/2013 For those interested in die state details, we have been adding very detailed text and photos to the obverse and reverse pages to allow die state identification. So far the obverse groups I1-7 are nearing completion. Why is this helpful? Have you ever tried to ID a reverse paired with an obverse that was used with multiple reverses? It can be challenging especially on worn coins. However if you can discern the obverse die state, then identifying the exact reverse becomes much easier. For example: suppose an obverse has 3 documented die states and was paired with two different reverses, suppose reverse #1 lasted just past obverse state 1 and the 2nd reverse was used during obverse states 2-3. If you have an obverse in state 3, it must be paired with reverse #2. This is a big job but, it should make your collecting much easier. Enjoy!
21. 12/30/2012 Renamed obverse 82 and reverse P21. This was due to the discovery of an unknown die pair by Gene Belair of CT. The changes are as follows:
Obverse 82 becomes Obverse 70a

Former Obverse 46 is now obverse 46a
Former Obverse 34 is now obverse 46
Former Reverse G5 is now reverse G7
Former Reverse G6 is now G5
Former Reverse G7 is now G6
18. 9/9-13/2012 Dr. Haxby's introduction to the 1859 Canadian cents article is now online. It is made up of nine sections. All Sections are live right now. Enjoy! LINK
17. 8/25/2012 Added die crack photos to obverse 3a and 4. This should make them easier to ID.
16. 8/13-25/2012 Another new feature being rolled out. Search by complete words on obverses grouped by specific reverse group. Sometimes seeing how letters relate to each other can help on otherwise difficult to ID coins. Now you will be able to see all the words Victoria, DEI etc. that fall within a group of coins such as all coins with reverse group J reverses. Here is a link, scroll down to complete words section and give it a try. Enjoy! As of 8/25 all obverses are complete.
15. 6/20-8/13/2012 Trying out a new feature that should make searches easier. Now when you go to a reverse or obverse die page where other dies are also paired with the same obv/rev, there are "quick links" on each die page to take you quickly to one of those other die pages. This will save you from needing to back out each time to check another reverse. Obverse 3a is being used to test this feature. Give it a try and let us know what you think. They are all done as of 8/13. enjoy!
14. 7/21/2012 Big changes today! Due to some recent discoveries various changes are needed. Remember to re-mark previously identified coins. Changes are as follows:

6. 5/6/2012 A new reverse has been discovered which shows that obverse die 77 was used before obverse die 76. This reverse is paired with both obverses; however, it is united with a late
state 77 and an early state 76. This required a number of adjustments in the catalog as follows:
(A) Former obverse 77 is now changed to obverse 76.
(B) Former obverse 76 is now changed to obverse 76a.
(C) Former reverse P16 is now changed to reverse P15
(D) The new reverse is called P15a
(E) Former reverse P15 is now changed to reverse P15b
(F) Former reverse P15a is now changed to reverse P15c
(G) Former reverse P15b is now changed to reverse P15d
5. 5/6/2012 A new reverse has been discovered paired with obverse 33. The new reverse is E35a
This addition involved a minor change to the catalog as follows:
(A) Since the new reverse was paired with an early state obverse 33, the former E35a is now E35b. The appropriate catalog numbers are noted on the Haxby Numbers page.
4. 5/5/2012 A new reverse has been discovered for obverse 55. The new reverse is J14a.
3. 5/4/2012 Obverse 53 and 57 were discovered recently to be the same. This required some changes as follows: Sorry for the extra work but that's one benefit of a web based catalog it can stay accurate.
(A) Obverse 53 is spare; obverse 57 now describes these coins with their various reverses.
(B) Reverses J12a-d are spare. Reverses marked J12a-d should be altered as noted below.
(C) Reverse J16 stays the same
(D) Reverse formerly known as J12 is now J16a
(E) Reverse formerly know as J16a is now J16b
(F) Reverse formerly know as J12a is now J16c
(G) Reverse formerly known as J12b is now J16d
(H) Reverse formerly known as J12c is now J16e
(I) Reverse formerly known as J12d is now J16f
2. 5/4/2012 Obverse 6 and 14 were discovered recently to be the same. This required some changes as follows: Sorry for the extra work but accuracy is treasured on this site.
(A) Obverse 6 is spare; obverse 14 now describes these coins with their various reverses.
(B) Reverse E8 is spare; any reverses you marked E8 should be re-marked as E16b.
(C) Reverse E16 and E16a stay the same.
(D) Reverse formerly known as E16b is now E16c.

Obverse 82 becomes Obverse 70a
Reverse P21 becomes Reverse P9a
Obverse 70 now has two Reverses paired with it P9 and P9a
20. 12/08/2012 Added die crack photos to reverse E7a and P14
19. 10/19/2012 Big changes today! Due to some recent discoveries various changes are needed. Remember to re-mark previously identified coins.
