1. ID Your Coin By Using Repunched or Unusual Letters
Since each obverse has 29 individual letters (plus the the period) in the legend that were often repaired by hand (with varying degrees of success), the combination of repunched or unusual letters on each coin is like a "fingerprint" that we can use to identify the die that made that coin. On the appropriate obverse photo above, click on the letter which looks repunched or unusual to see photos that may match your coin. Only significant repunches are included.

2. ID Your Coin By Using Die Cracks
Die cracks are one of the best and fastest ways to ID your obverse. No two die cracks are the same, even if they at first appear to be in the same place. Of course, early state coins will have few or no die cracks, but as dies were used many of them cracked, leaving clear evidence on the coins. On the appropriate obverse photo above, click on the letter or space between words where you see a die crack on your coin to see photos that may match your coin. 3. ID Your Coin By Using Die Clogs
Die clogs must be considered only as an aid to identifying which die made your coin as they are quite transistory, sometimes changing within a given state. Minor ones can also be hard to spot especially on worn coins. Therefore only major clog photos are shown. On the other hand on difficult coins they can considerably narrow down your choices. On the appropriate obverse photo above, click on the letter where you see a die clog to see photos that may match your coin.
