One of seven known "Bridge Dies" which struck both 1859/8 and Narrow 9 cents. This die was first used with N9 reverse die E5 and then with a wide 9/8 reverse die and then with 3 more N9 dies. Turner calls this obverse die OG5 in his studies.
Aside from the die cracks (when present), this die can be identified by the combination of three clear repunches (VICTORIA, REGINA, CANADA). Obv. 3a lasted a relatively long time, being associated with four reverses. Thus far it has been observed in eight different states. Also, two different clog patterns have been seen. Apparently Obv. 3 had a much shorter life life and was retired before reverse E5 had to be replaced, thus Obv. 3a started its life paired with a partially-used E5 reverse. |

In State 3 the gap between GRATIA and REGINA has two new details: a horizontal clash mark extending to the right from the base of the A and a small crack extending under it from the base of the R. In State 8 a second crack appears along the top of the clash mark.
