Aside from the die cracks (when present), this die can be identified by the combination of three clear repunches (VICTORIA, REGINA, CANADA). Obv. 3a lasted a relatively long time, being associated with four reverses. Thus far it has been observed in eight different states. Also, two different clog patterns have been seen. Apparently Obv. 3 had a much shorter life life and was retired before reverse E5 had to be replaced, thus Obv. 3a started its life paired with a partially-used E5 reverse.
